Jack Mercer (January 13, 1910 to December 4, 1984) Winfield B. Mercer, professionally known as Jack Mercer was an American film, television, dubbing, and stage actor, storyteller, animator and entertainer best known for his voice role as Popeye (Cartoon Series).
Popeye the Sailor Man is a fictional character from a cartoon series.

Dave Fleischer hears him sing Popeye\’s theme song in a funny voice and asks Jack to try out a cartoon. Later, he worked at the Fleischer studio as a writer.

Jack Mercer was born in New York City, on Jan 13, 1910, he was married to Margie Hines from 1939 to 1942 and then to Virginia Mercer until his death in 1984, he had no child.
Mercer\’s 1st wife was Margie Hines, who gave the voice of Olive Oyl from 1939 to 1944. Subsequent to separating from Hines, he later wedded his second spouse Virginia Caroll, the couple stayed wedded until Mercer\’s passing in 1984.
Initially an inhabitant of New York City, Mercer moved to Miami, Florida, when Fleischer Studios moved there in 1938. After Famous Studios assumed control over the Popeye kid\’s shows, Mercer moved back to New York by mid-1944.
In the last part of the 1970s he lived momentarily in Los Angeles however moved back to New York City to live in Woodside, Queens.

1. When William Costello, the first animation voice of Popeye (1933–1935), became hard to work with, he was excused. Mercer had started emulating Costello\’s translation of Popeye and rehearsed it until his voice \”broke\” perfectly and he had it down.
Looking for a trade for Costello, Lou Fleischer heard Mercer singing the Popeye melody and provided him with the occupation of doing the Popeye voice. Mercer\’s first animation was in 1935\’s King of the Mardi Gras.

Just a couple corrections. Mr.Mercer was born January 31, 1910. It is recorded in birth records in Greene County,mIndiana under his true name Winfield B. Mercer.
Also, he was born in Worthington, Indiana. There is quite a bit of documentation for this, besides the birth records, such as him saying it in a 1976 interview and on his marriage license, etc.. …
